Gizmo offers more than Skype
by Dan Roggenkamp - Tuesday, 30 October 2007, 06:36 PM

You've probably tried Skype, but have you tried Gizmo? Gizmo is a free Internet telephone package similar to Skype, but with some additional tools. For example, you can record your conversations on Gizmo and send free voice mail.

Gizmo There are other neat things that Gizmo can do that Skype can't, but these two qualities make Gizmo particularly well suited to language learning and online classes in general. Gizmo works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It works particularly well on Fedora.

You can find Gizmo at http://www.gizmoproject.com/.

What's up in Taiwan

I'm happy to have found this site. What's up in Taiwan posts interviews with expats in Taiwan. If you're not from Taiwan, this is an excellent source of information about this beautiful place.

And if you are from Taiwan and you're studying English, this site is a very good source of authentic listening material. These interviews will be especially interesting and relevant for English learners in Taiwan.

StoryCorps: Listen to people talk about their lives
by Dan Roggenkamp - Sunday, 8 July 2007, 02:55 PM

If you are looking for truly authentic listening material (as authentic as recorded material can be, I suppose), then you really must check out this site, StoryCorps.net. As you can read on their 'about us' page,

StoryCorps StoryCorps is a national project to instruct and inspire people to record one another's stories in sound.

We're here to help you interview your grandmother, your uncle, the lady who has worked at the luncheonette down the block for as long as you can remember—anyone whose story you want to hear and preserve.

They also have a podcast so you don't need to miss any new stories.

NPR: A very good source of listening material

NPR Radio If you take a look at the rss feeds I've subscribed to on this page, it will come as no surprise that I'm a big fan of NPR radio as a source of learning material, particularly listening material for intermediate and above level students.

My students quickly find out that I like using authentic material for my ESL classes, and I get a lot of it from NPR.

NPR also offers a wealth of excellent podcasts. Among my favorites for use in the classroom are StoryCorps, This I Believe, and Fresh Air.
